HealthCare.gov is the federal Health Insurance Marketplace, run by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). It serves residents of the roughly 26 states that don’t run their own exchange, handling eligibility, subsidies, plan shopping, and enrollment in one place.

What HealthCare.gov Does

HealthCare.gov checks whether you qualify for a premium tax credit or Medicaid, shows the plans available in your ZIP, and processes your enrollment and any income changes. It also runs a call center and supports certified agents and brokers who can enroll you at no cost.

Who Uses the Federal Platform

About 26 states use HealthCare.gov directly. A few more — Arkansas, Oregon, and Oklahoma — run their own “state-based marketplace on the federal platform” (SBM-FP), meaning the state oversees the marketplace but enrollment still happens through HealthCare.gov. Oregon is moving to its own platform for 2027 and Oklahoma for 2028.

Enrolling with Help vs. on Your Own

You can enroll yourself on HealthCare.gov, but a licensed advisor can do it with you for the same price — comparing every plan, applying your subsidy correctly, checking your doctors and drugs, and handling the paperwork. It’s the same premium either way, with an expert in your corner.

Fast Facts

  • Run by CMS for states without their own marketplace
  • Handles subsidy eligibility and enrollment
  • Serves ~26 states directly (plus SBM-FP states)
  • Same plans and protections as state marketplaces

Quick answers

Frequently Asked

Is HealthCare.gov the same as the government or Medicare?

HealthCare.gov is the federal ACA Marketplace run by CMS for private health plans. It is separate from Medicare. NovaVida Group is a private, independent agency and is not affiliated with HealthCare.gov, CMS, or any government agency.

Does it cost more to use an agent instead of HealthCare.gov directly?

No. Your premium is set by the carrier and is identical whether you enroll on your own or through a licensed agent — agents are paid by the carriers, so their help comes at no added cost to you.
