Almost anyone can buy a Marketplace plan, but eligibility for savings and for Marketplace coverage itself depends on a few factors — where you live, your citizenship or lawful presence, and whether you have other affordable coverage.

Who Can Enroll and Get Help

To buy a Marketplace plan you must live in the U.S. and be a citizen or lawfully present, and not be incarcerated. For a premium tax credit, your income generally needs to be above the Medicaid threshold, and you can’t have access to other affordable coverage such as an affordable employer plan. If your income is very low, you may qualify for Medicaid instead — the application checks both.

Fast Facts

  • Must live in the U.S. and be a citizen or lawfully present
  • Can’t be enrolled in Medicare
  • Subsidy eligibility depends on income and other coverage
  • Very low income may point to Medicaid instead

Frequently Asked

Can I get a subsidy if my job offers health insurance?

Usually only if the employer plan is considered unaffordable or doesn’t meet minimum value. If it does meet the standards, you generally won’t qualify for a Marketplace subsidy — we can check where you stand.
