Final expense insurance is a small permanent policy — often $5,000 to $40,000 — with simplified underwriting and usually no medical exam. It’s designed to cover funeral, burial, and final medical bills so loved ones aren’t left with the expense.

Simple by Design

Final expense policies ask a few health questions instead of requiring a full exam, so they’re accessible to older applicants and those with some health conditions. Premiums are fixed and the coverage never expires as long as you pay. Some policies for higher-risk applicants use a graded benefit for the first couple of years.

The benefit is paid to your beneficiary tax-free and can be used for anything — a funeral, outstanding bills, or simply to ease the burden on family.

Best For

  • Seniors who want to cover final costs
  • People who can’t easily qualify for larger policies
  • Anyone who wants coverage without a medical exam

Frequently Asked

Do I need a medical exam for final expense insurance?

Usually not. Most final expense policies use simplified underwriting — a short set of health questions — and skip the exam. Guaranteed-issue versions ask no health questions at all, in exchange for a graded benefit period.
