Losing other coverage, moving to a new area, getting married, having a baby, or certain income changes can each open a Special Enrollment Period — typically 60 days. If you’ve recently had one of these changes, you may be able to enroll today rather than waiting for fall. Here’s the full list of events the marketplace recognizes, and what to do when one happens to you.
A qualifying life event (QLE) is a change in your life significant enough that the marketplace lets you enroll or switch plans outside Open Enrollment. They fall into a few natural families: losing coverage you had, changes in your household, and changes in your circumstances.
Loss of qualifying coverage — a job-based plan ending, loss of Medicaid or CHIP, or turning 26 and aging off a parent’s plan. The most common trigger by far.
Marriage; birth, adoption, or foster placement of a child; and divorce or legal separation when it causes you to lose coverage.
Moving to a new coverage area, an income change that affects your subsidy eligibility, gaining citizenship or lawful presence, or release from incarceration.
Members of federally recognized tribes get a standing advantage: they can enroll or change plans monthly, all year long, rather than waiting for a window.
Most qualifying events open a window that usually lasts 60 days. For coverage loss, the window is often tied to the date your old coverage ends; in some cases you can even apply shortly before it ends so your new plan starts without a gap. The critical thing to understand is that the clock doesn’t pause while you think it over. Miss the window and you’re generally waiting for the next Open Enrollment — Nov 1 – Jan 15 in most states.
Say you get married in June. That opens a Special Enrollment Period for you and your new spouse to join a plan together — but only for that limited window. Or say your hours were cut and your income dropped enough to change your subsidy eligibility; that change itself can open a window to switch into a plan that fits your new budget. In both cases, acting inside the window is everything.
A word about the event people most often mishandle: turning 26 and aging off a parent’s plan. Because the birthday is known years in advance, it feels unhurried — right up until the coverage ends. The smart move is to treat the birthday like a project deadline: compare plans a month or two ahead, so the new coverage starts as the old ends and there’s no gap. Depending on the young adult’s own income, subsidies may make their individual plan surprisingly affordable.
You’ll usually need to document the event — a coverage termination letter, a marriage certificate, a birth record, a new lease or utility bill for a move. The marketplace typically gives you time to submit proof after you enroll, but gathering it early keeps your coverage from being delayed or unwound later. One important nuance on moves: relocating generally counts only if you had qualifying coverage before the move or are moving from outside the U.S. — a move made purely to get new coverage doesn’t qualify.
A Special Enrollment Period isn’t just permission to enroll — it’s a full shopping window. You can compare every plan available to you, not just re-create whatever coverage you lost. That matters, because the coverage you lost may not have been the best fit anyway. Someone coming off an employer plan often discovers that, with subsidies factored in, a marketplace plan costs less than the COBRA continuation offer sitting in their mailbox. Compare both before you sign either.
One clarification that saves confusion: this article covers the ACA marketplace. Medicare has its own separate special enrollment rules, triggered by events like moving out of your plan’s service area or losing employer coverage after 65 — similar spirit, different mechanics. If your life event involves Medicare, start with our Medicare guide instead.
