Group plans must be offered to full-time employees, with a few rules about part-timers, new hires, and waiting periods. Getting eligibility right keeps you compliant and your plan running smoothly.

The Rules That Matter

You must offer coverage to full-time employees, generally defined as those working 30 or more hours a week. New hires can be subject to a waiting period of up to 90 days before coverage begins. You can choose to extend eligibility to part-time employees, but it isn’t required, and the same rules must apply consistently to everyone in a class.

Fast Facts

  • Full-time = generally 30+ hours per week
  • Waiting period for new hires: up to 90 days
  • Part-time coverage is optional, not required
  • Owners and their families can usually be covered

Frequently Asked

Can I cover myself as the business owner?

In most cases yes — owners and their families can typically enroll in the group plan alongside employees, as long as there’s at least one non-owner W-2 employee enrolled. The details depend on your business structure.
