Marketplace plans are grouped into four metal tiers that describe how you and the plan split costs — not the quality of care. The right tier depends on how much care you expect and whether you qualify for extra savings.

Matching the Tier to Your Year

Bronze plans have the lowest premiums but you pay more when you get care — good for the healthy who want protection from the worst case. Gold and Platinum cost more monthly but pay a bigger share, which suits people who use a lot of care. Silver sits in the middle and is the only tier that unlocks cost-sharing reductions, making it the smart pick for many lower-income households.

Fast Facts

  • Bronze: lowest premium, highest out-of-pocket
  • Silver: middle ground — unlocks cost-sharing reductions
  • Gold & Platinum: higher premium, lower costs when you use care
  • All tiers cover the same essential benefits

Frequently Asked

Is a Platinum plan better than Bronze?

Not better — different. They cover the same essential benefits; they just split costs differently. Platinum costs more monthly but less when you use care; Bronze is the reverse. The “best” tier is the one with the lowest total cost for the care you actually expect.
